Literacy Video #1

I included this "old school" based video as it tugged at my heartstrings, and I just *had* to share!

Literacy Video

This YouTube video demonstrates the reason why I am *still* pursuing my Reading Specialist endorsement along with my Digital Media endorsement.  I already had the Reading part on my radar for one of my next education goals; however, after doing reading assessments on student this past year as well as working in ELA classes, I can see the need for "traditional" reading instruction/intervention as well.  Plus, the Reading endorsement will contribute to being a successful literary volunteer for adults struggling to read.

  1. Marylou,
Great post! I always enjoy reading what you have to say because you are such an eloquent writer! Your comment about how the vivid pictures and colors enhance the reading experience when reading digital media is a great point. I guess I never realized how much more my children enjoyed reading and seeing the pictures in their early picture books. This is a valid point. Maybe reading now online provides a higher level of comprehension because of the graphic representations. Great job!!

  2. Marylou,

Great post! I was interested to note McWhorter’s connection between texting and shorthand and other “ancient” ways of communication. I also strongly agree that it is impressive that young people can switch between contexts and audience despite their immersion in the digital media that is available to them.

As teachers we should utilize technology and adapt our teaching to embrace the technology available to us. Since technology is a valuable tool and very beneficial especially when differentiating instruction. I have personally seen the students thrive in a classroom that embraces technology.
