Hello!

My name is Marylou Smith.  I am embarking on my third stint in grad school.  I realize that that probably sounds like overkill, but opportunities keep appearing, and my educational goals keep evolving!

I started with a BBA in Business Administration and an MA in English which funneled itself into a School Library Media degree (MAT). I am now pursuing my M.Ed. as a Reading Specialist concurrent with an endorsement in Digital Media, New Literacies and Learning.  I have taught college-level English; however, after having my own children, I discovered that my true passion lies in teaching in the K-12 area.  I am certified in School Library Media PreK-Adult, so both the Reading Specialist and Digital Media endorsements will serve me well in my quest to develop readers both in the educational setting and through community volunteer organizations.

I am originally from Pennsylvania, and have come to reside in West Virginia via Texas.  I live in Bridgeport, and I have spent the last year working as an interventionist for Harrison County.  The position was a welcome challenge, as I worked with middle school-aged students covering science, math, and English Language Arts. Not only did the position push me to develop diverse strategies in a myriad of disciplines, it also allowed me to collaborate with a variety of educators to hone my own teaching strategies.

I have two young children who have been amazing support through my academic endeavors.  They are very involved in activities, so we are constantly on the run!  Horses, karate, c-ball, soccer, scouts, band.. we stay busy!

Classes that I have taken in the Masters program include:

*EDUC 6195
*EDUC 6295
*EDUC 6300
*EDUC 6301
*EDUC 6302
*EDUC 6303
*EDUC 6304
*EDUC 6305
*EDUC 6306
*EDUC 6320
*EDUC 6490
*EDUC 6495
*READ 6315
*SPED 6321

  1. Marylou I love how you have been able to find what you truly want to do threw your life and education. I still feel I am not sure 100% what I want to do with my life. My mother’s advice to me when I told her this would be “when she grows up she wanted to become a Math Teacher”. My mother was an English Teacher and horrible with Math but she always would take at least 1 math class every few years!

    1. Thanks.. I've taken the long road around education-wise, but in my heart, I've always known that teaching (in some capacity) was where I was *meant* to be...having my kids just brought it into crystal-clear focus!!!!

  2. What a beautiful family you have. I am sure you are an inspiration to them and many others. My favorite quote is by Benjamin Franklin, "Well done is better than well said." I appreciate people who don't just talk about what they are going to do. I can tell you are a doer as well. I look forward to sharing class with you.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Joyce. I am sure that my kids are probably rolling their eyes, thinking "again, Mom?" (as I just graduated with my MAT from FSU last May).. but, hopefully, they will see that you can control your own destiny and make choices that will shape your future and support your beliefs.. and, where there is a will there IS a way! lol Looking forward to class with you as well!

  3. You have a wonderful family..they definitely keep you involved and on the go. I reside in PA now. I was raised in PA, moved to WV for three years to teach, and now I'm back in PA teaching. My husband's job brought me back her. I look forward to reading your posts.

  4. Marylou,
Hello there friend! Here we go again! Another Masters' level class together. I always enjoy your eloquently written material. Oh how I wish I could write like you. Instead I do math problems. LOL I know technology can bring so many different facets to teaching that should be utilized when appropriate and available. Hope to be able to add new things to my bag after taking this class. Best wishes for a great summer.

  5. Hi Marylou,
You are quite the learner! I have a few friends that have 3 Master's degrees and it always intrigued me. You are also very busy with your kids' activities and it makes me somewhat relieved that I do not run to two or three different places for games and practices! Of course I am zig-zagging around the country watching my son race and my daughter's wedding has kept me pretty occupied as well. I feel as though if one has a family and completes grad school, we should automatically recieve some kind or organization award!!

  6. Hi Marylou,

I don't think it is odd at all that you are embarking on a 3rd Master's degree. I prefer to keep evolving too and I hope it is reflected through my teaching. I hope to eventually have my Doctorate in Ed. Technology but that seems so far away.

  9. Hello Marylou. Yes, I sang that. Glad to be another class with you. I didn't realize you had so many degrees, but I was well aware of your MAT because I remember your time in the library here at BHS. Look forward to reading your posts!
